Bioinformatics: NCBI and Beyond
This workshop is self-paced and the assignments will be submitted online. However, you are required to attend 2 meetings held virtually on Zoom, the workshop introduction scheduled for April 28th from 4:00-5:30PM and office hours scheduled for May 4th from 4:00-5:30PM. Both of these meetings are mandatory.
This interactive workshop will teach basic bioinformatics concepts and applications using the genome of the SARS-CoV-2 as a starting point. After the workshop introduction on April 27th, participants will work asynchronously on the assignments to gain hands-on experience with NCBI databases, genome browsers, and a variety of specialized tools for predicting protein function from a sequence. Instructors are available for support during asynchronous work. Participants will share progress during office hours on May 4th. We will use publicly available data and free web-based programs. No coding required.
This workshop qualifies for 10 hours towards Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Professional Development Points (PDPs).
