  • Explore the genetics of sickle cell and coat length in dogs using gel electrophoresis

Complete two different gel electrophoresis labs, both exploring Medelian genetics.  In this full-day workshop, you will use pre-prepared DNA samples to explore the alleles of the beta-globin gene responsible for sickle cell disease and trait and the alleles of the gene responsible for coat length in dogs. We will also explain how you can create your own genetics labs using purchased DNA fragments or dyes. These labs are appropriate for grades 7 – 12.

Massachusetts teachers that complete the workshop and submit a pre- and post-workshop assignment are eligible for 10 PDPs.

All participants can enroll in our equipment lending program.

Lunch is provided and parking is free.

  • Explore Photosynthesis with Algae Balls

This fun and reliable lab provides students with a compelling visual demonstration of photosynthesis and the opportunity to quantify their results.

In this online workshop, you will be guided through how to make the indicator solution, how to make the alginate, how to source concentrated algae, and how to form the algae balls needed for this lab. The first 20 teachers to register will be sent all the materials (except a light source) needed create their own algae balls and compete an experiment.

  • Genetics through Gel Electrophoresis

Complete two different gel electrophoresis labs, both available from miniONE as kits.  In this full-day workshop, you will use pre-prepared DNA samples to explore the alleles of the casein gene in dairy cows and determine which cow’s milk is better for cheese production. You will also use DNA samples that simulate BRCA breast cancer markers to investigate the scientific and ethical considerations associated with genetic testing.

Massachusetts teachers that complete the workshop and submit a pre- and post-workshop assignment are eligible for 10 PDPs.

All participants can enroll in our equipment lending program.

Lunch is provided and parking is free
