Participants will isolate their own DNA and use PCR to amplify the gene responsible for the ability to taste phenylthiocarbamide (PTC). They will then determine their genotype through restriction enzyme analysis and electrophoresis. Participants will also explore personal genetics through a complementary lab that simulates genotyping for the D1S80 VNTR (variable number tandem repeats) locus.
