The 2022 Biotechnology Summer Institute will take place Monday, August 8th through Friday, August 12th, from 8:30am – 4:00pm each day. The program is being held at the Learning Lab in LabCentral (700 Main Street, Cambridge MA 02139).

This training will build on your basic understanding and experience with molecular biology concepts and techniques such as electrophoresis, PCR, restriction enzyme analysis, and transformation to prepare you to add biotechnology into your current classes or launch a full biotechnology course. During this week you will review popular, student-tested labs and complete a cloning project to insert a gene from zebrafish into bacteria and purify the recombinant protein.  You will have the chance to use a variety of equipment designed for student use. Following completion of the program, participants are encouraged to apply for a BioTeach training and equipment grant.

The summer institute qualifies participants to earn 3 graduate credits in science from Westfield State University or 67.5 PDPs. To earn the graduate credit or the full number of PDPs, you must fully participate in each lab day and complete an online assignment. The assignment will be sent out in early June and must be completed before you arrive on August 8th.

This program is free. Parking and coffee will be provided. Participants will need to supply their own breakfast and lunch.

Space is limited for this program. Please register for the program by April 5th in order to apply/submit your interest. Once we receive your application a member of our staff will contact you. Preference will be given to Massachusetts public high school teachers who will be teaching 2 or more life sciences courses during the 2022-2023 academic year.

There are limited scholarship opportunities. If attending the Summer Institute creates a financial hardship, please indicate this on the application in the Additional Comments section.
