Director of Development & Marketing Job Description

The Director of Development & Marketing reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for overseeing fundraising, marketing, and communications and will supervise the Sr. Manager of Communications & Corporate Partnerships. The candidate will work closely with external partners.


The Development & Marketing Team is responsible for fundraising, growing and cultivating corporate partnerships, developing and implementing signature events and corporate programs, communications, and advancing brand awareness to further MassBioEd's impact in educating, inspiring, and developing talent in the life sciences industry.


  • Create and implement a development plan that details how the organization solicits donors and identifies funding sources such as public and private grants, in-kind donations, charitable events and marketing opportunities.
  • Work with staff team and Board of Directors to develop an ongoing marketing strategy that expands the target audience through community relations, speaking engagements, newsletters and charitable events.
  • Identify, establish and implement new long-term relationships with companies that advance the mission of the organization through positive and measurable impacts on biotechnology education and workforce development in Massachusetts and the greater New England region.
  • Secure new corporate support. Actively research, qualify, contact and cultivate new, mutually-beneficial partnerships.
  • Actively seek foundation, corporate foundation, and public grants.
  • Work the Sr. Manager of Communications & Corporate Partnerships to develop targeted proposals, letters of inquiry, reporting, and other communications for prospective and current partners.
  • Work closely with the MassBio Council membership team to ensure strategic partnerships are leveraged and appropriate communications are preserved with MassBio partners.
  • Work closely with Sr. Manager of Communications & Corporate Partnerships to lead development efforts for signature annual events, coordinating efforts across the organization to support and maximize fundraising efforts; and to retain, grow and manage relationships with sponsors for each event.
  • Assist Executive Director and Finance team in preparing organizational budgets to be approved by the Board, which will inform fundraising goals.
  • Engage the Board of Directors as it related to fundraising and marketing efforts and present comprehensive analysis and objectives at Board meetings.


  • Experience identifying, building and managing strategic partnerships, particularly with corporations.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in fundraising for non-profit organizations.
  • Experience in marketing and/or public relations.
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, business, nonprofit leadership, or related experience.
  • Persuasive writing and strong verbal communication.
  • Ability to interact at the executive level.
  • Strong relationship building skills.
  • High degree of organizational skills, with ability to multi-task and seamlessly re-organize priorities as necessary.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire the trust and confidence of others in the organization and external partners.
