[CANCELED] Exploring Personal Genetics with PCR (Cambridge)

This event has ended. We hope to see you at a future event. See upcoming events here: https://www.massbioed.org/events

Participants will isolate their own DNA and use PCR to amplify the gene responsible for the ability to taste bitter compound phenylthiocarbamide (PTC). They will then determine their genotype through restriction enzyme analysis and electrophoresis.  Participants will also explore personal genetics through a complementary lab that simulates the identification of individuals’ genotypes for the D1S80 VNTR (variable number tandem repeats) locus.

Participants will receive student lab protocols, teacher instruction manuals, and curricular support resources to implement these labs in the classroom. This workshop qualifies for 10 PDPs based upon completion of the designated assessments.
