Biotech Futures is a college and career exploration program designed for high school students who are interested in biotechnology and life science college majors and careers. It exposes students to the educational opportunities and diverse fields of study in college/university life sciences programs through presentations and hands on laboratory experiences. Students learn about current challenges facing scientists and engineers, including creating new medicines and treatments for disease, improving food production, coping with climate change, developing renewable energy resources, and remediating environmental degradation.

Endicott College

Date: October 12, 2018 and March 8th, 2019

Endicott College is a four-year, co-educational college located in Beverly, Massachusetts, 20 miles north of Boston. The oceanfront campus grants Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral degrees combining liberal and professional studies. The centerpiece of an Endicott education remains a practical approach to learning, including hands-on experience within a chosen field of study; internships are required in all majors. The undergraduate student population of 2,850 includes students from 38 states and 35 countries with 91% of students residing on campus.  State-of-the-art facilities provide a dynamic, student-centered environment, fostering a strong campus community through a variety of academic offerings, NCAA Division III varsity athletics, study-abroad opportunities, and many student clubs and organizations

Northeastern University

 Northeastern University empowers their undergraduates to chart their own academic path, through more than 90 majors and concentrations and global experiential learning opportunities in 92 countries. Northeastern's 158 graduate programs prepare students for emerging new fields; students are able to take courses on campus, online, or in hybrid formats, creating the educational experience that best meets their needs.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute:

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is a private research university primarily devoted to the instruction and research of technical arts and applied sciences. WPI's 14 academic departments offer more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in science, engineering, technology, management, the social sciences, and the humanities and arts, leading to bachelor's, master's and PhD degrees. WPI's faculty works with students in a number of research areas, including biotechnology, fuel cells, information security, materials processing, and nanotechnology. 

Bridgewater State University

Bridgewater State University offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate, graduate, and evening degree programs. Centrally located and widely respected, Bridgewater is committed to making a challenging, high quality education accessible and achievable for students in the region and beyond.

Target Audience:

The Biotech Futures program is designed for high school sophomores and juniors who have demonstrated and/or expressed an interest in the life sciences. Recommended group size is 30-45 students per school, although we might be able to accommodate smaller and larger groups. We require that students are accompanied by at least one school representative. Guidance counselors are strongly encouraged to attend this event.

Sample Biotech Futures Agenda:

  • 8:00 am - Registration and refreshments
  • 8:30 am - Welcome & Overview
  • 9:00 am to 11:00 AM - Students rotate through two different labs or activities*.
  • 11:00 am to 11:45 am - Lunch
  • 11:45 am to 1:45 pm - Students rotate through two different labs or activities*.
  • 2:00 pm - Students Depart


MassBioEd will reimburse participating schools for up to $500 for the cost of bus transportation for their students and coverage for up to two substitute teachers for their teachers' involvement during the day. Please note that schools must make their own transportation arrangements and directly pay the bus company. To apply for reimbursement after the event please complete the Biotech Futures Reimbursement Form and submit as instructed.

Application Process:

The BioTech Futures event is open to all public school students only. 

Teachers will receive an email if their class has been selected to participate. Priority will be given to classes that register early and have completed the registration form below for 30-45 students. For returning schools, only students who have not previously participated in the Biotech Futures program should participate in this event.
