Jump-start your new year with an exciting biotechnology workshop hosted by MiniOne Systems, MassBioEd, and Fitchburg State University! Come spend a day with your colleagues from across the state at a fun and dynamic workshop. You’ll enjoy working with teacher and student-friendly MiniOne equipment to explore multiple facets of biology and learn about new labs and approaches to teaching important biological concepts.

In this FREE workshop, teachers will…

  • Perform PCR and compare ELISA antibody results to determine who has the flu and who may have natural immunity from previous exposure of vaccination.

  • Collect data and design an experiment to determine which food at a party caused a food poisoning outbreak.

  • Choose your own adventure-Pick one of three labs to do to illustrate how molecular biology can be used to connect real world phenomenon in forensic, health and agricultural science.

    • Solve a murder mystery OR

    • Determine the genotypes of a family with a history of sickle cell disease OR

    • Help a farmer choose the best cows and bull to increase the value of his/her milk for cheese production.

  • Examine results from an enhanced GFP transformation lab.

  • Be eligible to earn 10 PDP by attending entire workshop and completion of pre and post assignments (issued by MassBioEd).

  • Learn about Fitchburg University’s lending program for MiniOne electrophoresis equipment.

Although the activities that include PCR are intended for high school level classes, the other labs can be readily adapted for
middle school students!

MiniOne Systems is providing all materials and lunch free of charge. Parking will be provided by Fitchburg State University.
