Teacher Professional Development

While a major component of the MassBioEd mission is to provide high schools with funds for capital equipment and consumable supplies to support life sciences laboratory experiences, we believe teachers are the Commonwealth's greatest resource. Teachers who are well-educated, technically skilled, and embrace new technologies with confidence, can inspire student curiosity and ignite student interest in STEM. Through the BioTeach Teacher Technical Training Program, the Do It Yourself Biotech Equipment Workshop, the Laboratory Curriculum Design Boot Camp and other teacher professional development programs, MassBioEd plays a unique role bringing together resources from universities, biotech companies, and our own staff to provide teachers the skills and knowledge to implement innovative life sciences labs and develop cutting-edge life sciences curricula.

Career Exploration Day

MassBioEd sponsors Career Exploration Days to give Massachusetts public high school students the opportunity to experience the connection between classroom science and the science that drives our biotechnology industry. Through on-site industry visits, students considering careers in biotech gain first-hand knowledge of the kinds of activities and responsibilities industry employees engage in on a daily basis. Career Exploration Days are inspiring and invaluable events for both participating students and biotech professionals.

Biotech Futures

nThrough Biotech Futures students and their teachers visit university/college campuses, interact with science/technology faculty and students, and engage in a number of short laboratory experiences. The goal of Biotech Futures is to demystify the college experience, expose students to diverse life sciences fields, and ecourage students to pursue life sciences related careers.

In the 2016-17 school year 922 students participated in 20 College and Career Exploration Days.

Innovative School of the Year

In 2010 MassBioEd established the Innovative School of the Year MassBioEd recognizes a Massachusetts BioTeach high school that distinguished itself through exemplary educational programming in the life sciences. Recipient schools are selected on a competitive basis for the depth and breadth of science education programs, the effective application of the BioTeach curriculum, and for innovative biotechnology education and career programming to foster curiosity and inspire student interest in life sciences careers. Recipient schools receive $5,000 to purchase equipment and supplies for life sciences education programs and is recognized the MassBio Annual Meeting Awards Luncheon.
