BioTeach: Building Bio-Science Literacy, One School at a Time
BioTeach is the signature program of the Massachusetts Biotechnology Education Foundation (MassBioEd). The goal of the BioTeach program is to introduce biotechnology to the science curricula of all of the Commonwealth’s public high schools in order to engage students in hands-on biotechnology lab experiences aimed at inspiring curiosity about and preparation for life science careers. From 2005 to 2009, MassBioEd offered a competitive grant program that provided selected schools with biotechnology equipment such as electrophoresis boxes, micropipettes and consumables such as gels, lab kits; it introduced varied teacher professional development efforts. Initially funded by a US Department of Labor High Growth Industry grant and supplemented by corporate contributions and state support, the Foundation has taken BioTeach to 177 high schools, training nearly 500 science teachers and touching over 30,000 students.

Now in its fifth year, BioTeach continues to support the schools, teachers and students in 177 public high schools in Massachusetts. The Foundation is temporarily not able to award new BioTeach grants to schools due to the loss of state and federal funding. The Foundation staff continues to seek new opportunities to raise funds and is busy writing federal and private grants while also seeking donations and sponsorships from within the corporate community.
Since its inception in 2005, BioTeach has proudly raised and distributed over $6,000,000 in equipment, supplies and services to support secondary science education in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

MassBioEd regrets that the BioTeach Grant Program is currently unable to award grant money to new schools. Current funds raised by MassBioEd are directed to sustaining and enriching the existing BioTeach community of high schools. While we continue to seek alternative funding, we are generating a wait list. To be added to that list please email your interest in BioTeach to: communications@massbioed.org.

Life Science Career Development Initiative
The Life Science Career Development Initiative (LSCD) is the developmental edge of the BioTeach high school programs. Working with a small group of selected BioTeach high schools our leadership has researched and supported them as they institutionalized a sustainable, collaborative, leadership model involving guidance, administration and science teachers. Together these teams have created a learning environment to better support student learning, career and education awareness and planning.
Life Science Career Development Priorities
LSCD schools:
- Demonstrate a strong partnership involving school administrators, guidance counselors, career specialists, science teachers/science department chairs working in collaboration with higher education institutions and local Workforce Investment Boards and School-to-Career Partnerships to provide quality academic and related work-based learning experiences that support career development in the life sciences.
- Provide students with an organized “scope and sequence” (Grades 9-12) of academic, technical/technological and work-based learning experiences through which they achieve high standards while exploring career choices in the life sciences including, but not limited to, biotechnology, bioengineering and biomanufacturing.
- Demonstrate innovative recruitment and outreach strategies to interest students in pursuing the above scope and sequence for a career in the life sciences. Prepare students to make informed post-secondary education, training, work, and/or other life choices.
- Identify specific cohorts of (25-50) 9th or 10th grade biology students.
- Implement the Massachusetts School Counseling Association”s “comprehensive school counseling model” by collaboratively working with other relevant partners to develop and deliver career guidance lessons.
- Promote strong student academic achievement through an applied science curriculum integrating BioTeach curriculum and resources into classroom instruction.
- Collect pre- and post- data to determine the value of these activities and to document and strengthen student and program outcomes.
- Coordinate service delivery with other available resources where they exist, including: school/ district resources; Connecting Activities; Workforce Investment Act services; community-based resources; or other related student services.
