BioTeach Gets Taught: Teachers, program sponsors learn about programs

This past August, as has happened every year since the program began in 2005, teachers and faculty from new BioTeach schools came together with biotechnology professionals to take part in the BioTeach Summer Workshop.Teachers workshop

But this year, they were also joined by representatives from companies that have sponsored the BioTeach program , in an effort to deepen industry awareness and involvement in the BioTeach curriculum of the Massachusetts Biotechnology Education Foundation (MassBioEd).

Biotech Booms at Somerville High

Chris Angelli knows what it takes to get high school students excited about science-and it's not in a textbook. Angelli, a teacher at Somerville High School, used the initial investment of a BioTeach grant to lay the groundwork for a series of biotechnology electives, cutting-edge labs, and the opportunity for students to see how school work can turn into a career.

"The response has really been overwhelming. We have gotten to the point where we have begun to turn students away because we just don't have the room to put them in the classroom," Angelli said. "I never got this experience until college. This exposure helps the students understand before that point."

Cubist's Corporate Citizenship Shines

Long before Lexington-based Cubist Pharmaceuticals became a profitable biotechnology company, President & CEO Mike Bonney pledged that once the company became profitable, Cubist would start giving back in a formal way. Informal giving and volunteerism was long a part of the corporate culture.

Airgas Logoy Cubist has experienced eleven quarters of profitability and earlier this year the company was named the #1 Massachusetts company in the Boston Globe's Globe 100 rankings based on its financial performance in 2008. Cubist also launched a formal corporate giving program that focuses on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. [More]


Go Back To School with New Courses

It's back to school time-and not just for the kids. The MassBioEd Foundation is offering new, exciting courses for professionals in the biotechnology industry.

Business of Biopharmaceutical Development: From the Lab to the Street is a course designed to turn research into marketable products and services. MassBioEd partnered with Bentley University to offer this new course, which will cover everything from developing a business plan to financing an idea and handling investor relations. [More]
