Millipore Treats Lowell H.S. Students toBioTeach Dedham real world science

BILLERICA, MASS.-In early May, several scientists at Millipore Corp. and 17 students from nearby Lowell High School were put together under one roof with the help of MassBioEd.

Q&A with Mass. State Sen. Robert O'Leary, Chairman of the Joint Committee on Higher Education

Sen. Robert O'Leary, who has represented Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket in the Massachusetts State Senate since his election in 2000, was named Chairman of the Legislature's Joint Committee on Education earlier this year.

The MassBioEd Foundation sat down with Sen. O'Leary to talk about his new committee post, the challenges of the current economic downturn, and the importance of STEM education in Massachusetts.

Mass. Students Compete in International Science Fair with Biotech Projects

 
Deepika Bhargo, of Somerville, knew she wanted to compete at an international level after winning her school's science fair in the seventh grade. MA Delegation to ISEFBut she didn't know quite how she would achieve that goal.
 
Now 17 and an upcoming high school senior, Bhargo has already competed twice at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the world's largest pre-college science competition, with projects in biotechnology both times. Other students in the Massachusetts delegation of 25 who competed at the ISEF with a project in biotech were Marlborough High School seniors Anisha Gundewar, 18, and Rebecca Baur, 18.  [More]

MassBioEd's LSCD Program Creates Interest in Life Sciences Careers
 An Overview of the LSCD Program and the Eight Participating LSCD Schools of 2008-2009
As part of the BioTeach grant program, eight schools in Massachusetts participated in MassBioEd's  Life ScieBrighton LSCD studentsnce Career Development (LSCD) program this past year.
 
"Our LSCD program helps educate students about the skills needed to pursue careers in the life sciences after high school," said Suzanne Grillo, MassBioEd's Manager of Outreach. "By taking career development exercises out of the classroom and onto college campuses and biotech company facilities, students can see for themselves the exciting careers the life sciences industry can offer them."  [More]
